Special Feature: Fresh from the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show, two paintings by Michael Petrie of Michael Petrie's HANDMADE GARDENS that are interpretations of Monet's late, large-format Water Lilies series. Petrie's canvases measure 6.5 feet by 20 feet and come to us straight from

the Flower Show, where they were a part of the Petrie-designed central feature exhibit called La Toile de Jardin ("The Garden Canvas").

for the record, i get really uncomfortable on camera. also, i only had 1 hour of sleep the night before. (the week was a comedy of errors and i had to stay up horribly late to finish preparations) enjoy?

hello everybody.

i just wanted to check in.
i've had a bit of a break this summer, exhibition wise, which has been nice.

i am revamping my website and it should be updated within the next couple of weeks with my new work.

i will be having an open studio this fall as well as being involved with several group shows.

i have been working hard for my next event.

it will be held at a dear friend's brand new exhibition space, and i am honored to be the first artist to exhibit there.

the main (entry) floor is a jewelery collection focusing on estate jewelery - beautiful antiques with such wonderful stories behind them, and also his original pieces of jewelery.

the space upstairs is a fine arts gallery.

i will have about 30 of my pieces there- at least 15 of which are brand new and never exhibited before.

i have been so very busy lately!
this is a very good thing, though my head is spinning.
please forgive me for not updating my website more regularly.
it seems that so many wonderful opportunities have been coming my way- i've hardly had time to sign my newest work before it slips out of my hands, let alone get photographs of them.
this is a wonderful problem, i know.
in a few weeks i will be updating my site with about 18 new images.
also, i have a solo show at a gallery in berwyn, pa coming up in april.

my little brother/dear younger friend is struggling with his first relationship and possibly his first real heartbreak...
and i sit here amidst my own chaos of emotions, relationship and to-do's...
so grateful for the quiet but my heart with his...

the sister of a "brother" (very close friend) died tragically a few days ago...suddenly i have events popping up with my artwork that i joyfully could not foresee all the while praying for them as the service is tomorrow...

an odd acquatence/ brother of loved ones dies by his own hand a few weeks ago...
i am wrestling and finding my heart again after burn out. after too much of a good thing, at the same time the grief felt for everybody involved with the above situation makes me want to weep at times almost beyond control...

there is major family drama that wrecks my heart more than many could understand...
i broaden the tricks in my bag to include liquid latex body painting on fashion models for photo shoots

heartache strikes...suddenly i am overwhelmed by the amount of people deeply responding to my work.

it all comes in turn
as it is supposed to it seems
though it's always far above me...
and each day all i can do is try my best- give my best.
i am always surprised by what has transpired by the end of the day.

when i was younger i felt that i was very in tune with things-
at least it seemed to me as such.
i imagined that as i grew older this would only increase...that i would become very wise.
(and i have 8 fully grown-in wisdom teeth in this mouth! really!)
but i am afraid every day i learn of life's lessons all over again
aching to understand
with my view much more broadened by experience-
with so many quietly asked questions upon the wind
(others not so quietly asked in the heart-sickened tirades on my knees.)

wisdom...i believe it comes without you even knowing its there...
life always seems to surprise me.
and as for tomorrow-
well, i have my set plans...
a bunch of important errands
an appointment at 1pm
and then work at 4 until ungodly hours bar tending (usually at least 3 am).

but what will really transpire tomorrow?
what will be on my mind as i'm winding down 24 hours from now?

God only knows.
and that is a bit of a scary thing,
but also so exciting...

(to fellow bloggers- do you ever feel like Dewey Houser in all of this?! i just got a twinge of it- a blue screen with white letters musing at the end of my day with a distant voice narrating. i just have to laugh myself! )

of a letter written to somebody moved by artwork-
referring to my heart as so obiously inolved...

of my heart...
the most true,
the most valuable part of me
yet the most twisted and defiant part of me-
the worst of me, the best of me
aching to do good,
but always screwing up...
the fight in me.
most of all-
pouring out
aiming to give to whoever God connects these beaten broken hands to
humbled continually
constantly knocked on my knees when there is pride.
i would not call it pretty
i would say its anything but easy.
but i will continue-
i don't feel like i have a choice!
it may only mean something to a blessed few,
but its my calling
and i will die giving it my best...
or at least trying my best.
nothing ever speaks more to me of why i do all of this,
(why i work so hard... why i work many jobs that i may love in the process to provide, why most often i choose to paint over eating, vacationing, sleeping, or even caring about my appearance...)

then when somebody falls in love with one of my paintings,
in a way that has nothing to do with me.
i would imagine some artists would have an issue with this,
but for me...
it's home
it's why i do it.
occassionally i cross pathes with someone who bought one of my pieces years ago and they tell me how much it means to them...
how it has become a part of their home/family...
and they are speaking to me if as i was just a distant a part of it,
i hope this makes sense.
you speak of my heart.
and yes, even on the bad days it's me there wrestling with my heart through the process...
but in the end what occurs between people and my work...
well that is far above and beyond me.
it both humbles me and keeps me longing to do this hard thing.
all this to say i am both grateful and humbled that my artwork means something to anybody.
may it continue to do so!

The History of Encaustic
Encaustic painting was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B. C.. Most of our knowledge of this early use comes from the Roman historian Pliny, who wrote in the 1st century A. D.. Pliny seems to have had very little direct knowledge about studio methods, so his account of techniques and materials is sketchy. According to Pliny, encaustic was used in a variety of applications: the painting of portraits and scenes of mythology on panels, the coloring of marble and terra cotta, and work on ivory (probably the tinting of incised lines).

Wax is an excellent preservative of materials. It was from this use that the art of encaustic painting developed. The Greeks applied coatings of wax and resin to weatherproof their ships. Pigmenting the wax gave rise to the decorating of warships. Mention is even made by Homer of the painted ships of the Greek warriors who fought at Troy. The use of a rudimentary encaustic was therefore an ancient practice by the 5th century B. C.. It is possible that at about that time the crude paint applied with tar brushes to the ships was refined for the art of painting on panels. Pliny mentions two artists who had in fact started out as ship painters.

The use of encaustic on panels rivaled the use of tempera, in what are the earliest known portable easel paintings. Tempera was a faster, cheaper process. Encaustic was a slow, difficult technique, but the paint could be built up in relief, and the wax gave a rich optical effect to the pigment. These characteristics made the finished work startlingly life-like. Moreover, encaustic had far greater durability than tempera, which was vulnerable to moisture. Pliny refers to encaustic paintings several hundred years old in the possession of Roman aristocrats of his own time.

The nature of encaustic to both preserve and color gave it wide use on the stone work of both architecture and statuary. The white marble we see today in the monuments of Greek antiquity was once colored, probably delicately tinted like the figures on the Alexander sarcophagus in Istanbul. Pliny says that when the sculptor Praxiteles was asked which of his pieces he favored, he answered those "to which [the painter] Nicias had set his hand." Decorative terra cotta work on interiors was also painted with encaustic, a practice that was a forerunner to mosaic trim.

Fayum funeral portraits

Perhaps the best known of all encaustic work are the Fayum funeral portraits painted in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. by Greek painters in Egypt. A significant Greek population had settled in Egypt following its conquest by Alexander, eventually adopting the customs of the Egyptians. This included mummifying their dead. A portrait of the deceased painted either in the prime of life or after death, was placed over the person's mummy as a memorial. Many of these pieces have survived to our own time, and their color has remained as fresh as any recently completed work.

In the great period of economic instability that followed the decline of the Roman Empire, encaustic fell into disuse. Some work, particularly the painting of icons, was carried on as late as the 12th century, but for the most part it became a lost art. The process was cumbersome and painstaking, and the cost of producing it was high. It was replaced by tempera, which was cheaper, faster, and easier to work. In the 18th century the idea of encaustic painting was revived, initially by amateurs as a novelty to rediscover the techniques of the ancient painters. It was further explored in the 19th century, to solve the problem of dampness faced by mural painters in northern climates. The success of these efforts was limited, and encaustic remained an obscure art form.

In the 20th century, the availability of portable electric heating implements and the variety of tools has made encaustic a far less formidable technique. This factor has created a resurgence of encaustic painting, and it is once again taking its place as a major artists' medium. "Its effects, its visual and physical properties, and its range of textural and color possibilities make it eminently suitable for use in several different contemporary styles of painting that are not adequately served by our traditional oil-painting process."

it's easy to get stuck in a rut. it's easy to let hard times get you down. and it's even easier to let little and big blows to the heart slowly numb you- without you hardly even noticing.

tonight i visited the site of a gallery that represents me- Barnstone Gallery in phoenixville, pa...
and i reflected over the interview questions they presented me with for my portion of their site.
i sat there near to tears, somewhat numbed from life's events....somewhat far away from myself and as i read over the answers to the questions they asked i was deeply moved- "yes! this is why i do it all! this is why i submit myself to this crazy lifestyle! this is my very heart!"

i thought i would share...

Creative drive:
“Creating for me is close to breathing on the scale of what is necessary for me to be a functioning human being. I truly am not ok if I am not creating in some form. In a deeper sense, I continue to create (whether I feel like it or not) because I have seen people be deeply moved by my artwork. It is a humbling, beautiful thing. "There are several emotions that are represented in my work. The idea of Baptism by Fire- overcoming hardship- seeking hope in the face of hard times. What is unique about your process:
"I find the paintings as I paint them. I may have an idea of what I want it to be, but as if the painting were alive and had equal share in what it turns out to be, we aim to find each other. While this intuitive type of creation is beautiful in its own right, and obviously the way I was made to do it, it can be a very exhausting, frustrating (sometimes nerve wrecking) experience. Also unique in my process are my materials. Sometimes I paint in Encaustic using my best friend, the blow torch. Sometimes I paint in “mixed media”- basically everything and the kitchen sink. (plaster, wax, resin, polyurethane, shellac, enamel, tempera, acrylic, oil, colored pencil, dry pigments, ink, dye and gold leaf)"

Personal relationship with your work:
"Goodness….it means a great deal to me. It is what I produce with my life. With my tired beat up hands. Hoping, praying that good things will come of them when they are finished and out “there” being viewed. I feel that it is my calling. One of the main reasons I exist. What I need to do with my life no matter how difficult it may make my life. I sacrifice what is necessary in my life to continue to do so."

Thoughts on sharing art:
“Art in any form has the ability to connect to others, insight depth, goodness, comfort and inspiration to those interacting with it. What good would it be if I painted endlessly and hid them all away?! I do not do it for myself alone. I do it to share. i read this article tonite and thought i might share.
i know a lot of artists are really struggling. i am very blessed to have my side jobs to supplement my income. but this is the current state of being that you might not think of if you are not involved in the art world directly...

The art of a recession: Gallery owners struggling

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Art gallery owners across the country are finding they have a tough sell these days.
With houses going up for auction, unemployment continuing to rise and the threat of layoffs seemingly ever-present, many gallery owners in art communities such as Scottsdale, Ariz., Santa Fe, N.M., Portland, Ore., and New York City are closing shop, going broke to stay open or drastically changing the way they do business.
"Art is a very discretionary sort of object, and we are in the worst recession arguably in the postwar era," said Jay Bryson, a global economist with Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, N.C. "Obviously somebody who has lost their job in a factory in Indiana probably is not buying art."
Even people with plenty of discretionary money aren't spending much on it.
"You're a billionaire and you took a 40 percent hit on your portfolio, now you only have $600 million left," Bryson said. "That's still pretty deep pockets, but 40 percent is 40 percent."
In the gallery district of downtown Scottsdale, at least a half dozen galleries have closed in the past year or are in the midst of closing. Others still are wondering how much longer they can make it.
One recent day, Leslie Levy sat quietly amid the contemporary art she sells in her gallery, which was just as deserted as the streets outside, where the temperature was in the triple digits.
The summers here are always slow because of the heat, but this one is much worse than usual. That's partly why Levy is closing her doors at the end of August after 32 years in business and becoming a private art dealer online.
"I'll tell you what — if I was younger, I'd just keep at it knowing we've not seen times quite as bad as this before," Levy said.
Longtime customer Marylyn Gregory of Bernardsville, N.J., came in the gallery that day to see it one last time and check out what pieces Levy had left of her and her husband's favorite artist. Gregory told Levy she was surprised and upset when she heard the gallery was closing but added, "You're probably doing the right thing."
Gregory didn't end up buying anything that day, saying she needed to check with her husband. Before, she might have been more spontaneous.
"Sometimes you'd go to an opening and have a glass of wine, and you're like, OK," she said. "It's certainly the method to get everyone to open their checkbooks."
But like many other art lovers, the Gregorys are more conservative with their money these days.
Levy understands. "People are watching what they spend — cutting back and spending on the necessities of life. That makes sense to people."
Becky Smith knows that all too well. She owned the Bellwether Gallery in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood for a decade, but closed at the end of June after watching her revenue plummet to $80,000 gross in the first quarter of 2009. She had $40,000 net, and $10,000 of it went to rent each month.
The $80,000 figure was down from about $350,000 the same quarter in 2008 and about $600,000 during that period the year before.
"I was really startled," Smith said. "It was the spring of '08 where I saw three shows that should have been blockbusters underperform, and I was in shock.
"Things were booming so intensely a couple years ago and the pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction, it was impossible to know where I stood," she said. "And I didn't want to be paying for a storefront while I was figuring it out."
In the past two years, at least 24 galleries have closed in Manhattan, mostly in Chelsea, according to New York City-based Artnet magazine, which covers the fine art world. "That's really dramatic," said Artnet editor Walter Robinson.
In Santa Fe, N.M., between 10 and 15 galleries have closed this year, said Christy Walker, managing director of the Santa Fe Gallery Association.
"A lot of people have this idea that running a gallery, the owners make a lot of money, when it's just a lot of effort to make a living off of it," she said. "It's a hard business to be in, and when things are good, things are good, and when times are tough, it's a really tough business to maintain."
Kraig Foote of art one gallery in Scottsdale has done everything he can think of to avoid shutting down.
His house is about to go up for auction because he hasn't made a payment in seven months, he has laid off his two employees and he has resorted to selling his own beloved art collection for a fraction of what it's worth.
"I have given up everything," he said recently in the very empty gallery, which sells work by local high school- and college-age artists.
And still, the threat of closure looms.
"I'm trying to make it to December," Foote said. "I think people will start spending again once they get to the next holiday. They'll say, 'We've saved, let's get something.'"
He paused. "I don't know."

i must admit it has been a very rough week for me.
i am human. and in a very sincere way i am sorry for that.

but hopefully being human yourself, you understand...

it is in hope i keep going.

it is for the beauty of all that is given

these gifts...

the heart of the matter.

though i hate to promote myself- i must if i aim to make a carear out of my artwork, but alone... me and my artwork enter our own communal state...

in the quiet of the late night i return to my knees and lose myself so willingly

in what i was made to do

in what i feel called to do

i shake off the business of it all

and the hard times of life

aiming to embrace the beauty of it all.

it means the world to me

and i will die trying.

what else can i do but give my absolute best?!

and perhaps my greatest gift and my legacy is that i gave with all my heart...

poured as best i could into my artwork...trying to do my best with everything.

to anyone who feels deeply...there is truly no avoidance of pain...
but what good can one do despite it all?

find me anyone who doesn't aim to live with all their heart

who does not find that life's discouragement and heartache reaches them.

ahhh. but watch...

see what hope blooms from hard times

see what absolute beauty can be found...

for the past few months i have been working on a series of miniatures.

being a jack of all trades- one of my jobs is at a cigar shop.

all of these paintings are painted on cedar cigar box lids that my generous employers put to the side for me.

this holds it's own recycling endearment to me in of itself.

i love using what would otherwise be cast off as trash and make something beautiful out of it.

though these pieces are small, most often i labor over them just as much as my larger pieces.

despite size differences, i am finding it easier to simply mass price them.

all miniatures are $95.00

making something lovely out of the unlovely...

this is a reoccurring trend for me. taking what some would see as waste and using it to make something beautiful. a regular example of this...unfortunately i am a smoker. every so often i sit down to do my budget and am frustrated all over again by the amount of money my bad habit costs me. also, i have come to realize the amount of waste my cigarettes and the packaging generate. in effort to redeem myself at least somewhat i have often taken to using my bad habit to aid in my artwork. below are some examples of pieces using this idea...

"One Man's Treasure No.1"

(work on paper framed)

in this piece, i saved my cigarette butts for weeks and then used them to dye/transform paper.

the only paint used on this piece are the white squares and thin black lines. everything else is from my "butts".

this pieces is using that same type of paper (the orange and brown colors)
as a base onto which i painted an encaustic painting

"Into Glory"
during my smoke breaks, i brought paper with me. i burned holes in this paper with my
lit cigarettes. i then embedded this paper into the painting, even gilding it in one layer.

i was able to visit the exhibition on the opening night and was floored by so many of the pieces.

if nothing else i am so so honored to have my painting be included- of over 2,ooo Pennsylvania based artists who applied, only 15o were chosen.

i realize that i give a great deal of buisness cards out to people on chance encounters that i may not get to see again. i also realize that complete strangers may stumble upon this site. for this reason i'm doing an info session below. please forgive me for all of those who already know me...

who am i?

why do i paint?
i have to.
i have been made to need a creative outlet and it seems to be primarilly via 2D artwork.
not only this- i feel truly called to do so.
no other time do i feel most alive- most validated in my existence, then when somebody stands before one of my paintings and has a deep and meaningful connection with it far beyond anything having to do with me.
it is both extremely humbling and encouraging.
more over, honestly, i am just me- trying to always be a better version of me in all aspects of my life. i mean this in a sense that is not self depricating, but honest and true. this life is a journey- a great process that we experience and move along.

what is it to be an artist?
i believe mondrian put it best:
"The position of the artist is humble. He (/she) is esentially a channel."

why do i show my work?
what good is it if i labor compulsively on my paintings and shrowd them in cloth kept up in my studio? what possible good does that do anybody unless they are discovered after my death and then they might be shown? i put them "out there" confident, if nothing else, i have given it my best and i'm hoping it means something to somebody.

is it hard for me to sell my artwork?
no....and its not a cold-hearted buisness thing. i create these pieces and in doing so i am very much passionate in the actual creation process. when they are finished, they sit quiet amongst the wreckage of my studio. when somebody falls in love with one of my pieces- it feels like it has reached its home. as if i was a foster parent... i gave it my absolute best, but now it is happy in its home and i couldn't be more excited.

what is my idea of success?
what am i working towards? ideally only painting one day. please understand, i am extremely grateful for my jobs- but i do hope to someday only focus on my artwork.
it is not so much about acclaim, critiques or who exactly says what. its about doing what i have been called to do and that very thing being used to connect to people in a personally beneficail way.

so you say its a 'beautiful hoby'...
a hobby...that still grates on me sometimes. this is not a hobby. i do not tinker. i throw myself fully into the passion of creating my work. it takes a great deal of blood, sweat and tears (really- i am very clumsy!). there are many times when i'm working on several pieces and none of them are being resolved- as with a fight with in the most intense love affair i can imagine, i storm off and when i've calmed down i return to continue. the baptism by fire. sometimes i could have spent years on a piece and it is just not working. it becomes a puddel of wax on my floor.
not to mention the many times in the past 4 years where i literally had to choose between spending money on art supplies or spending that money on food. i chose art supplies. and probably always will...
(though i have been very blessed lately to not have to worry as much.)

why should somebody look at/ follow my work?
well... you like my work or you don't. often i find that people i'd never expect fall in love with one of my pieces. i have also seen many who tend to love abstract work gloss right over mine. truly- if you like it...if you connect to it, you do. if nothing else you are witnessing an emerging artist continuing her journey, hell-bent on doing her best. please, watch the progress of my paintings. and if you can make it out to any of my receptions- i will be glad to see you!

First Friday in West Chester
at PGM Real Estate.

i have had several pieces on display in this space for the past few months.
on this night we'll be welcoming visitors with wine and cheese
to see my work and the charming gentlemen of PGM reality. (they're wonderful!)

PGM reality is located at 39 West Gay St.
it is a second story office space above primo hoagies.
this event will be a part of the first friday in downtown west chester,
when most galleries and shops stay open late.

Art in the State of Pennsylvania

i am honored that my painting above, "Beloved"
has been chosen amongst 157 other works (from over 2,000 others) to represent
the artists/artwork currently created in the state of Pennsylvania.
this show is at the State Museum in Harrisburg.
there is a gala reception you are welcome to attend on Saturday, June 27th.
i will be trying to attend, but due the event listed next, i might not be able to make it.

Open Studio

this event will feature 5 downtown West Chester based artists and our studios.
this a great opportunity to see me in my beloved studio and see what i've been up to.
it's also a great opportunity to see 4 other wonderful artists of
various disciplines in their studio environments.

this is a traveling exhibition that i've been participating in for the past 3 months.

what a great event. thanks to you, it was very successful.

i have a lot going on through may and june...

i just exspanded my studio space. if you have ever been to my studio, i still have the front room to paint in, but i have now acquired the connecting office to use as my own office/display area/storage. very exciting...

and you can see it either by contacting me and setting up a meeting or you can come out to the west chester based studio tour . it will be held on Saturday, June 27th. it will include several other downtown west chester based studios. i will post more in a few weeks.

also, there are several more Art4Barter events comming up that i will keep you posted on.

lastly, and the next event...
i will be participating in the second annual Village of Eagle Spring Festival.
the Village of Eagle Spring Festival will be held Saturday, May 16, from 10-6.
Set on over 3 acres of meadow right off of Pottstown Pike in the Village of Eagle, the Festival will feature fine arts and antiques vendors, music, local wineries, and children’s activities, as well as the best of area restaurants!
i will have several of my paintings hanging in the barn, and i'll be there to meet and greet everybody. please come out!

This weekend is the Chester County Studio Tour.

this event features 11 artists in 2 locations.

i will be set up at the first location

80 Highspire Rd. in Downingtown, PA

under a tent with at least 25 of my paintings, including 6 new pieces.
